there has to be more prey than predator, because there has to be sufficient prey to breed, live, keep the population going, and be eaten in sufficient numbers to keep their predators alive.
The way I'm talking sounds like there is some game keeper, but actually its just nature, and if anything upset that balance, a number of species ends up extinct.
Mice at maturity are 4-5 inches much smaller then a mature rat 8-10 inches. Mice also have large ears compared to their head were rats ears are smaller. Both Rats and Mice are rodents that can invade our homes and carry diseases.

Wild mice typically live in fields, forests, and grasslands, while domesticated mice are bred to be kept as pets. Wild mice have a shorter lifespan than domesticated mice due to predators and harsh environmental conditions. Domesticated mice have been selectively bred over generations to have specific traits such as coat color and behavior, making them different from their wild counterparts.
Mice reproduce alot faster than fox and hawks, so they have a higher population.
