because they didnt have any tasks on the way back
Pike was the leader of one group that was sent out to explore the west. Lewis and Clark were the leader of the other group. In the end they return but Pike was not and much as a hero like Lewis and Clark. They just wanted to please Jefferson.

Lewis and Clark did not discover Washington state. Native American tribes had lived in the region for thousands of years before the expedition arrived. Lewis and Clark did explore and document parts of what is now Washington state during their journey from 1804 to 1806.
There is no known family connection between Lewis and Clark, but this doesn't not mean there isn't one. Meriwether Lewis's family tree has been researched back through at least 32 generations with links to both European Royalty and American Presidents. William Clark's ancestry is a bit murkier as it pretty much hits a brick wall after going back a mere 5 generations.
The explorers began their journey home on March 23, 1806. On July 3, after crossing the Continental Divide, the Corps split into two teams so Lewis could explore the Marias River. Lewis and Clark stayed separated until they reached the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers on August 11. Once reunited, the Corps was able to return home quickly via the Missouri River.
