I visited Captain Mike's Ship Ahoy Tavern (of Times Square, New York) back in 1944, whilst I was serving in the British merchant navy. I remember the barmen used to slide your beer down the bar to you - if it didn't stop directly in front of you, you didn't pay. I never knew anyone who got away with paying though - those barmen really knew how to slide a beer.
