By engine light I am assuming you mean the "Service Engine Soon" light. This light will come on indicating a problem with your vehicle detected by the On Board Diagnostics (OBD) system. The OBD system monitors engine performance and emissions controls.
There are many problems that can cause the "Service Engine Soon" light to come on. If the light flashes, it means that a cylinder misfire has been detected. If it stays on steady, it could be any number of things, from a loose gas cap to a failing oxygen sensor. Your best bet would be to take it into a mechanic, or even some lube shops (i.e. Jiffy Lube) and have them scan it with their OBDII code reader. That will give you a better idea of what's going on.
