What was the declination of the Sun on March 21 this year?

June 21 is generally the date of the Summer Solstice. (It can vary from the 19th to the 22nd depending on the cycle of leap years.) On the Solstice, the Sun will reach a declination, or "apparent elevation from the equator", or 23.5 degrees.

How many months go between when the northern hemisphere receives direct rays from the sun as opposed to the southern hemisphere?

There is no time between these. On the day before the autumnal equinox, the sun is directly overhead in the northern hemisphere (at a latitude just north of the equator). The following day, it is directly overhead in the southern hemisphere (just south of the equator). The sun goes from being overhead in the northern hemisphere to the southern hemisphere instantaneously, the change happening at the autumnal equinox.

When is the sun directly overhead on summer solstice?

The sun can only be directly overhead at high noon, when one is between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn (within about 15 degrees latitude of the equator). Otherwise the sun only reaches a zenith (highest point) on the southern horizon when one is in the northern hemisphere, and vice versa.

Why is the moon out at night?

The Moon "being out" is as a result of sunlight being reflected off of the moon. The moon itself does not turn on and off like lightbulb. The moon reflects sunlight 24 hours, 7 days a week. The strength of the light coming directly from the Sun is much stronger than that reflected off of the moon, so it is hard to see the Moon during the day. At night, there is no direct sunlight and the Moon becomes apparent.

Why do the poles receive less solar energy than the equators do?

It is because the North and South Poles don't point right at the Sun, as the Equator does, being on the top of the Earth the poles cannot get the direct rays from the Sun. But, the Equator can because it is always pointing towards the Sun, thus, getting more solar energy. Hope this helped.

When is the last day of winter 2012?

Depending on where you live, the last full day of winter, 2012 will be either March 19, March 20, September 22 or September 23. Winter ends at the moment of the earth's orbit when the hemisphere that you are in goes from being tilted away from the sun to being tilted toward the sun. The sun will be directly of the equator at 5:14 AM UTC on March 20. Until that time, the sun will be over the southern hemisphere, and after that time it will be over the northern hemisphere. The sun will be directly over the equator again at 2:29 PM UTC on September 22, after which it will again be over the southern hemisphere.

What is the autumnal equinox time?

How do sloes and equinoxes relate with seasons?

An equinox is the time when the day and night are of equal length in a day. It is also the time that the Sun is directly overhead at Earth's equator at noon. A solstice is the time when the day and night are the most different in length of time than any other time of the year. It is also the time that the Sun is farthest from being directly above the Earth's equator at noon.

When does Autumn start -?

In the southern hemisphere that happens no earlier than March 19 and no later than March 22. In the northern hemisphere that happens no earlier than September 21 and no later than September 24.

Lines of latitude are horizontal or vertical?

They are parallel to the earth's equator. So if you consider the equator as being horizontal then they are horizontal.
