Sydney Carton was something of a dark horse hero, since until the end of the book, he consistently spoke and behaved like a dissipated wastrel. It's only in the last chapters that we see Carton's true nobility of character and capacity for unselfish love.

This is debatable. In my opinion, in book 1, lucie can be considered a hero for saving doctor mannette from his mental imprisonment and his physical imprisonment. I am not sure about book 2, but in book 3 i would definetely say Sydney Carton. He sacraficed his life for darnay and his love for lucie made it possible.

Sydney Carton could be considered the hero for switching places with and dying for Charles Darnay. You could also say Dr. Manette is the hero for helping the family too.
