most of their freedom. they couldn't write letters or even speak to Americans. they would be punished if they wrote mean or bad things about the government in news paper articles. they escaped from Cuba because they couldn't leave because of their economic difficulties.

Fidel Castro was popular among the Cubans because of the excesses of the corrupt Batista regime. However, his Communist collectivist policies made him a dangerous ally of the USSR in the Americas.
It wasn't Americans, or at least the US Armed Forces. It was CIA-trained Cubans that wanted to take back their country from Fidel Castro. It was disastrous and didn't work.

About going to Cuba in a boat From the perspective of the Cuban government, anybody to go to Cuba on a boat except Cubans who presently live outside of Cuba. These Cubans can go to Cuba, but only by plane. If you are an American citizen, there is no problem with the Cuban authorities for you to take your boat there. In fact there are many private US yachts in Cuban marinas all the time. However, there is a problem with US authorities, who might give you a hefty fine if you are a US citizen.
