These were the gigantic coiled ammonites, some of which were six feet in diameter. These animals, long extinct, were related to the much smaller chambered nautilus which lives today in the Pacific and Indian oceans. How closely they resembled the latter is impossible to say, as only the shells remain and the soft parts of the animals are unknown. The largest shell today is the giant clam (Tridacna) of the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, which reaches a weight of well over four hundred pounds.
