Mares are particulary hard. PLEASE stay safe because they can get nasty too. I really strongly recommend lunging with a cavesson, sursingle, and side reins or a full training equipment which does LOADS of adjusting. keep short training sessions and don't do a lot. just keep basic and take your time, you don't want to get her sour. keep lunging with equipment to build those muscles so its easier for her when you get to riding.
