A French wine in a blind tasting may not be recognized by the layman (and Probably will not) when compared to a quality wine from California, New York or Maine. But the layman in the mass market drinks most of the wine and places an appreciation for what he or she might call the real thing. The humble Clam or Oyster with an attached label like Blue Point or Chesapeake Bay is valued above the unnamed counterpart.

Maine is north of portions of two Canadian provinces. Portions of Ontario extend as far south as Michigan and the northern tip of Pennsylvania. The northern portion of Maine is also farther north than Montreal in Quebec.
Maine provides all those wonderful foods. The blueberries are wild, smaller and tastier than cultivated varieties by far. The lobsters and clams are especially good from the cold Atlantic waters. Cranberries are less prevalent, though. Massachusetts provides all these as well, and has a significant commercial crop of cranberries, they have mostly the cultivated blueberries. All New England states on the coast have lobsters, clams and blueberries, but not many also produce cranberries.
