A French wine in a blind tasting may not be recognized by the layman (and Probably will not) when compared to a quality wine from California, New York or Maine. But the layman in the mass market drinks most of the wine and places an appreciation for what he or she might call the real thing. The humble Clam or Oyster with an attached label like Blue Point or Chesapeake Bay is valued above the unnamed counterpart.
Angus Beef is no better then Hereford.
Colorado Lamb is no better then Wyoming lamb of the same grade.
They are the same product but because of a long history associated with the name they are given a higher value in the marketplace.

All New England states on the coast have lobsters, clams and blueberries, but not many also produce cranberries.
