In contemporary Italy, there is an undeniable difference between Northern Italians and Southern Italians that is recognized by Italians in general. Like regional differences in other countries, this difference can be a cause of good-natured teasing and friendly disagreements; however, it does occasionally appear in a discriminatory way, especially on the part of attitudes among Northern Italians. All the same, such discrimination is generally not the cause of any extensive social problems in Italy at the present time.
