They don't cause much problems but if you do get them. You won't even notice. Maybe a bunch of red spots in certain area where they burrow in but they should die pretty quickly.

Sorry, but your answer is dead wrong. We are currently suffering from a bird mite infestation in our home. They are attacking my husband mercilessly. We've had an exterminator come out several times (a special chemical mix must be used), but they're not gone yet. Their bites hurt! Showering frequently and using a loofah and epsom salt are recommended, as well as spraying yourself and your clothing with Arrid XDry deodorant. Vacuum and change bedding daily. Use a lint roller to remove them from your body. This is serious; they are very hard to get rid of and make your life a living hell!!!

Bird mites can and will complete the life cycle on a human.

they have the ability to change inviorment as well as hosts they can live up to 6months with no host becoming active when they sense a host present. Usually they dont bother people but an abandoned nest Mice, Rats, birds will have several hundred thousand mites left behind. I am not an expert nor an etomoligst but I know what doesent work Permithren anything from your local Home Depot, methane gas, chlorine Gas, malthion will work If you have a small yard.

If they're on you, they're in your house. I suggest you get an exterminator who specializes in bird mites. They use a special combination of poisons. Vacuum daily and remove rugs and carpeting if you can. Wash bed linens daily. Be vigilant - we've had them for weeks and they're just not going away. It's a nightmare.

No they only carry feather mites that wont affect humans...

However often in wild birds nests are red mites. Very prolific, very contagious, very hard to be rid of and blood sucking little beasties. These red mites can invade your home and can bite you. They will affect humans.
