According to the web site available below, there are 258 calories in a fairly large (3" - 4 1/4" dia.) potato. They fill you up. They have lots of good vitamins and minerals. They have some good carbs. At 258 calories each, they make up about 17% of a 1500 calorie diet. If you eat them plain, without oil, butter, dressing, bacon bits, cheese, sour cream, or any of the other wonderful fattening things we tend to put on potatoes, they're OK for losing weight. But lettuce and carrot juice are better.

Actually potatoes are not bad. They are about 110 calories per medium potato. Cut them up like french fries and bake them. The key is to skip the butter and sour cream but you can learn to do that pretty easily.

Try the " Gold " variety. They already have a slight buttery taste, and yams , even better. More fiber.

Baked food can be a factor in your weight loss. Exchanging baked chicken or baked potatoes instead of fried chicken or french fries can provide a lower fat alternative. Baking does not require a great deal of oil or fat the way frying does.
