Yes, they often do.
And sometimes they are not. Not everyone is unaware of thier problematic behaviour. I am a sex and love addict who is now abstinent from mad compulsive relationships via working the first few steps of the program of Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) ,based on the model pioneered by Alcoholics Anonymous. i was unaware of my behaviour for a long time. Then I was later aware of it, but still going full force because the knowledge of it there- but that did not give me the power to stop it. And that is a horrific place. Though I could not tell people for a long time what I saw in myself, i did know by my late 30's. And the guilt of it made me act out more- trying to kill the pain of that knowledge.
