There is some confusion on this because the Dominican Republic was briefly occupied by the US during and immediately after the first world war. President Wilson ordered the U.S. occupation of the Dominican Republic. US Marines landed on May 16, 1916, and had control of the country two months later. Opposition to the occupation increased after the war, and President Harding ended the occupation in October 1922, and elections were held in March 1924.
