Just up until the 40's the average age for a man was 8 years older than his wife and sometimes he was much older. Centuries ago many old men in their 60s plus would wed much younger women in their teens and the Mormones of today (the Elders) will often marry young teenage girls and have many wives. Generally it's best to stay in your own age bracket, but, some people enjoy the maturity of an older person (because the younger person thinks in a more mature fashion) but, the age difference shouldn't be anymore than approximately 10 - 15 years old. The reason for this is eventually the younger of the two will get bored with leading a quiet and seditary lifestyle and want to get out and kick up their heels like most young people would. We all see it with actors (older men marrying much younger women and Paul MacCartney is one of those men .. he's 64 and his soon to be ex-wife is 36.) Generally never works and some women could just be after money. His wife will come away with millions.

AnswerIt's happened many times, and usually for the wrong reasons. Depending on where you live, it can be illegal, and you can call the motives of the older person into question. If you're a teenager, it's best to date people your own age.Why would a supposedly mature adult, especially someone older than 19-20, want to be with an emotionally, intellectually unmature teenager? Some people seek signifigantly younger people for various reasons--sexual desire for very young people or ideas of dominance or 'grooming' the younger person sexually or emotionally to do what they want them to.
Many teenagers have had sex, but that doesn't mean they have the emotional experience or judgment to get involved with a much older person. The problem is, the teenager might think it's "love" and doesn't seem themselves as too young or not experienced enough to handle the situation, which often times they can't.
