There are now 88 official constellations. Throughout history some constellations have been identified but never became official constellations. Their stars have been allocated to some of the official constellations we have today. Occasionally individual stars have been reallocated to other constellations. For example, the "Argo Navis" used to be a constellation representing the Argos, or the ship of the argonauts before it was broken into four constellations: Puppis, Vela, Pyxis, and Carina. Depending on which culture you are from there may be many obsolete constellations. The Ancient Egyptians and Chinese had their own, however these may be the most noteworthy: Antinous--The Youth Apis--The Bee Argo Navis--The ship of the Argonauts Cerberus--The 3 headed dog Custos Messium--The Harvest Keeper Felis--The Cat Ferderici Honores--Frederick's Glory Globus Aerostaticus--The Hot Air Balloon Lochium Funis--The Log and Line Machina Electrica--The Generator Malus--The Mast Mons Maenalus--The Mountain Musca Borealis--The Northern Fly Noctua--The Owl Officina Typographica--The Printing Press Phoenicopterus--The Flamingo Psalterium Georgii--George's Harp Quadrans Muralis--The Mural Quadrant River Tigris--The Tigris River Rober Carlinum--Charles' Oak Sceptrum Brandenburgium--The Brandenburg Scepter Sceptrum et manus Iustitiae--The Scepter and the Hand of Justice Solarium--The Sundial Tarandus vel Rangifer--The Reindeer Taurus Poniatovii--Poniatowski's Bull Telescopium Hershelii--Herschel's Telescope Testudo--The Turtle Triangulum Minor--The Lesser Triangle Turdus Solitarius--The Solitary Thrush Vespa--The Wasp
