Who would've guessed? In Canada they recommend never using one at all. So I guess 17 months is long enough. I'm going to remove it.
A baby crib bedding set usually consists of a crib skirt, fitted sheet, a comforter and a crib wrap or bumper that protects the baby from the slats of the crib sides. The crib wrap or bumper has ties on the outside that are just long enough to be tied around the slats to hold the wrap upright.
The American Pediatric Society discourages the use of crib bumper pads for several reasons. Bumper pads are only decorative in nature since laws now regulate the size between the slats of a crib. Bumper pads have a risk of causing strangulation or suffocation.

I believe that the bumper pads are the safest thing for your baby.
Crib bumper pads are made with a variety of fabrics with most companies having their own preferred choice. Most bumper pads have been replaced by the alternative breathable mesh because of the recent wave of suffocations caused by the pads.
The bars in a baby crib should be close enough together so that it is impossible for the baby to get his head stuck. This will prevent the baby from choking itself.
if you buy them used, like at a garage sale, they're cheap. I did that for all my 9 children - just make sure to clean them before you put them in the crib. I learned it the hard way after my first child got lice just several days into it. Good luck shopping!
Over the years people have used many items in cribs as bumpers to protect children. Blankets and towels were used in older times. Bumper pads came out in the 80's and were considered a decor as well as a safety item and were sold with many crib sheets.
Yes, the bumper pads provided cover all four sides.
If possible, open the box and inspect the crib in the store. I have taken items like this home, only to return them because some of the wood pieces are broken. It is a major pain to take something this big back to the store. This crib has gotten good safety reviews which is great. The only thing I would be careful of is that the ends are solid rather than slatted. If you're planning on using a crib bumper, it will be hard to secure the bumper with the solid sides. It can be done, but its not quite as secure.
