The brake light switch (aka stop light switch) resides at the top of your brake pedal near the pivot point, next to an identical looking cruise control switch. On a 2001 Xterra, the brake one is on the passenger side (left). When the brake pedal is released, the switch is engaged and the brake lights on the back of the vehicle go off.
The switch can go bad but the first thing to check is a button-type of a pad that is located on the brake pedal arm where it pushes the switch. The button does crack and split off in time and is often the cause of the brake lights staying on. If the button is missing, you will see a small hole in the brake pedal arm with the switch plunger not being engaged at all. For comparison, look at the cruise control switch next to it: it has the identical button.
The round button is made of a hard silicone type of plastic and resembles the those pad that sit on the bottom corners of small furniture and office machines. Besides the dealer, some auto parts stores may have them on the side.
Installation is simple:
get a foot stool so that you can lay on that and the floor under the steering wheel;
start the vehicle so that the brake pedal can be pressed further down;
make sure the parking brake is engaged;
use a dab of soap on the part of the button (tit) that is to be pushed in to the hole;
maneuver the button into the space between the switch and the hole with the tit facing down (small pliers may help hold the button steady);
when the tit centers on the hole, release the brake and the pressure from the switch will pop the button into the hole; and your are done!
A towel nestled against the firewall under the pedal is advisable because if the button is dropped (and you will do so a number of times), it can fall behind the carpet.
Hope this helps!
