Lula was unhappy and upset when Calpurnia brought the Finch children to church because she felt that the white children should not be attending a black church. Lula believed that the children didn't belong there and expressed her disapproval openly.
In the book "To Kill a Mockingbird," Lula, a member of the congregation at Calpurnia's church, tried to intimidate Calpurnia by questioning her decision to bring Scout and Jem to a black church. Lula made them feel unwelcome because they were white.
Calpurnia's church is called First Purchase African M.E. Church. It is an African Methodist Episcopal church located in Maycomb, Alabama.
Zeebo is Calpurnia's son in "To Kill a Mockingbird," who works as the garbage collector in Maycomb. Reverend Sykes is the minister at First Purchase African M.E. Church, where Calpurnia and the Finch family worship.
First Purchase
In 'To Kill A Mockingbird,' Calpurnia takes Jem and Scout to services at the First Purchase Baptist Church. At this time, black and white churches were just as segregated as other parts of society. All the members are not happy to see the white children at their church, but Calpurnia continues to make them feel that they belong anywhere she is.
Calpurnia mentions that in First Purchase church, there are four people who can read.
The experience at Calpurnia's church helps Jem and Scout see Calpurnia in a new light, as they witness her in her element among her own community. They gain a deeper appreciation for her skills in managing a different environment and begin to understand her as a multi-dimensional person with her own identity and relationships outside of their household.
On one Sunday, Calpurnia takes Scout and Jem to the "black church". When one member of the church wants the children to leave, Calpurnia insists that "It's the same God." In my view, I think that Calpurnia believes that everyone's equal.
She took Jem and Scout to 'her' church.
