Mississippi laws are superseded by Federal Law: The United States Department of Labour states that the minimum age for any consideration is 14.

However, at the age of 13, an individual is permitted to do the following:

  • deliver newspapers
  • babysit on a part-time basis only
  • work as an actor or performer in film, TV, radio, or theatre;
  • work at home gathering evergreens and making evergreen wreaths
  • work for a business owned entirely by your parents as long as it is not in mining, manufacturing, or any of 17 hazardous occupations. One of those occupations involve exposure to dangerous chemicals.

Ergo, as a funeral home works with dangerous chemicals, provide the boy was not directly involved in embalming or prep of any kind, it may be possible.

In conjunction with the above, there is an annotation by the Mississippi Department of Labour that expands on hazardous materials:

"The Commission or Administrative Judge may order double compensation assessed against any employer where a minor worker is injured in the occupations or businesses specifically listed as hazardous in said sections of the Mississippi Code of 1972.

In view of the above, strict adherence to the laws and regulations is advised.
