Can a man stay faithful in a marriage?

It's possible, and it depends on what the affair meant for him. Many "slip" once ("it was just sex" scenario) and feel so ashamed that the trauma prevents them from repeating the deed. Others have an emotional involvement, which is tougher. Some are chronic cheaters. Depends on the character, and only the wife knows her husband well enough to know the answer. Confessing is an important step though - I'm not sure I agree that a cheating spouse should confess but I appreciate the gesture nonetheless.

From my personal experience NO. My husband and I went through this few times during our marriage (we are together since 1990 with two children) and after each time he would cry, told me how he loves me, that I was wrong, and he never wanted to do this or hurt me blah blah blah. After all this I am at the point where we are no longer partners but we live this charade of life where we cannot openly divorce because of our children so we live under the same roof but separate rooms and separate lives. I am not sure though for how long we will be able to go on like this.

I really dont think that just because he admitted to cheating that he will remain faithful from then on...he may he may not it really depends on what he wants....

The man's confession cannot simply be the end of it. I say this as a man who has cheated myself- so long as the couple lets the confession act as "the end of the mistake", he can, and most likely will, cheat again. In order for the relationship to survive, both parties need to gain a full understanding of what happened. What led to the cheating in the first place, and how can they both take steps to insure it won't happen in the future. If both parties are willing to seek therapy to gain a greater understanding of what went wrong, there may be a chance. Just remember, though: a spouse who cheated may not necessarily be just an jerk who thought he could get away with it. In my case, I discovered through my cheating that I am a sex addict with anxiety and depression triggers, and knowledge of my addiction was something that was absolutely exploited by the woman I cheated with. Through both individual and couples therapy, I'm coming to deal with all these issues (and more). I'm still working, and my wife and I realize that maintaining our relationship will be an on-going process through the rest of our lives, but we're closer now than we had been in years, and our relationship is considerably healthier.
