Cats often run away when you move house, as they become attached to their old territory more than its owners. Often they find their way back there, but often get lost or killed on the roads. Cats, especially tom cats, are known to go walkabout, and may end up run over. Cats that are ill treated by their owners will wander off to find another owner (which they usually do) or might find another owner for some other reason. Some cat haters deliberately kill cats that wander on to their property.
Of coarse they do, cats remember their family members as well as humans do.
