If horses are very hot (such as after a hard training session) they should not be given food or cold water until they're cool. You may offer them a couple swallows of water, but do not let them drink unattended. It is best to cool them off first, by walking them around or hosing them down with cool water. You should not let your horse drink cold water while they are hot because it can cause your horse to colic. This can be serious and even lead to death in horses. So before you let your horse drink a lot of cold water, check his temperature. One way to roughly check a horses temperature and see how warm he is, is by putting your hand on his chest and seeing if it is hot. It should be warm, but not hot. I hope I helped in answering your question :]
If a horse has just finished a large http://exercise.answers.comsession and is sweated up or breathing heavily DO NOT let them http://drinks.answers.comto much, they can drink for 5-10 seconds then take them away and wash them down, feed them, THEN you can see if they are still thirsty. If you give a horse too much water after exercise it will keep drinking and drinking because it thinks it's very thirsty, whereas it is most likely it just needs a good brush down and some feed.
Answer 2:
Not giving a horse much water after exercise is a myth! This myth arose from a lack of knowledge in old time farmers and horsemen. It used to be thought that giving a horse too much water (especially cold water) after exercise could cause cramps and colic. This myth has been dis-proven but is still taught to horse people all over the world. A horse knows how much it needs to drink when it is thirsty and will consume enough water to rehydrate itself. If you are worried about giving too much water use a small bucket, somewhere around 2 to 4 gallons (8 to 16 quarts) and put slightly cool water in it. As you walk the horse to cool it down let it drink each time it passes the bucket. Once the horse is cool you can put it in it's stall and let it drink from it's regular bucket (remember to groom the horse before putting it away.) 'Hard feeds' such as grains should be withheld for about an hour after exercise, but the horse should always have hay available, along with water.
Because of a horse's delicate digestive system, cold water should not be given to horses when they are really hot, as it can cause colic, a dangerous and sometimes deadly equine affliction.
