Directions for Popping (from a bag of yellow popcorn kernels):
Use a deep pan with a cover. Put 1/4 cup of cooking oil into pan, heat oil briefly then add 3/4 cup of popcorn and cover pan. Shake gently until popping stops. Remove pan from heat and pour into bowl.
Suggested oils: canola or grapeseed
Popcorn pops period because in the kernel (ker-nelle) or nut, there is water. So when the heat or fire touches the water inside the kernel, the water creates pressure and the kernel turns inside out which creates what we Americans now call popcorn.

No The pop corn machine would break.
Yes, you can cook it in a frying pan. Just put some olive oil in the frying pan.
You can make it in an open frying pan, but it will pop everywhere.
There is less oil and fat accumulated in the popcorn in contrast with pan-made or microwaved popcorn. And there is less accumulated gases in air popped popcorn than microwaved popcorn.
Ice melts faster in hot water than in a frying pan. When ice is placed in a hot frying pan, it forms a layer of steam which it floats upon, that insulates it, to some degree, from the frying pan. Thermal conduction is better when it is immersed in hot water.

Popcorn is popped by.... Well, first you put corn in a popcorn machine, or, if you don't have one, put it into a pan (with a lid), put it on a stove and start the stove. In a while you'll hear some popping sounds, and, if you want, you can lift the lid and watch the popcorn pop. Then, after a few minutes take the popcorn off the stove and you'll see popcorn. The popcorn is popped because there isn't much air in the pan, right? (That's why you need a lid) and the corn swells up and then...it bursts and is made into...popcorn! Put the popcorn into a bowl, and enjoy! It's OK if there are a few kernels still in the bowl. Don't worry. But still. You can't pop the kernels that are left. They won't pop.
