What is the difference between group velocity and phase velocity in a stationary wave on a string?

The velocity of a wave which maintains consatnt phase at all successive positions during propogation is known as wave velocity or phase velocity. The velocity of a group of waves which maintains constant poditions during the propogation is known as group velocity.

How would a physicist define average velocity?

Average velocity is simply the difference in position, divided by the time. Since you use the word "velocity" rather than "speed", a direction must be indicated. Exapmle: If you drive 100 km. due North, during 2 hours, your average velocity is 50km. per hour due North.

What is any change in velocity during a given length time?

Acceleration is any change in velocity during a length of time.

What is an object doing during deceleration?

Its velocity is getting smaller.

What is an average velocity of zero?

That happens when the position at time "2" is the same as the position at time "1". In that case, since the difference in position is zero, the average velocity (during that time) is also zero. Note that the object under consideration may well have moved; in that case, it returned to its original position.

The velocity of a body was noted to be constant during five minutes of its motion What was its acceleration during this interval?

Acceleration means speeding up or slowing down, a change in velocity. Since the velocity was constant, the acceleration was. 0

Does velocity equal acceleration x time?

Yes, sort of. At least, that's the units used. The actual definition of acceleration is: a = dv/dt In other words, the rate at which velocity changes. In the case of constant acceleration, that would be equal to a change in velocity, divided by the time interval during which this change takes place. In the case of non-constant acceleration, the acceleration, or rate of change of velocity, can of course change from one moment to another.

What happens to momentum when football players tackle one another.?

during a tackle, two or more forces collide. Their total is mass is then combined, but their velocity is slowed. The heavier mass moving at a slower velocity results in the overall momentum being equal.

What is final velocity minus initial velocity divided by time used for?

That expression represents average speed during the time.

What is a change in velocity in a certain amount of time called?

Acceleration is any change in velocity during a length of time.

Can an object have momentum in space?

Yes. Momentum is based entirely upon mass and velocity, as shown by the equation p=mv, where p is momentum, m is mass, and v is velocity. Since an object can still have both mass and velocity in space, it can have momentum in space.

What is the formula for the angular velocity?

There are several, what is it that you want to calculate? The "natural" units for angular velocity are radians/second. The relationship between linear velocity and angular velocity is especially simple in this case: linear velocity (at the edge) = angular velocity x radius.
