Blinds are both convenient and attractive. They can let a person allow sunlight into a room with the simple twist of a knob or the pull of a string. They also come in many designs that can accent a room and make a home beautiful.

However, blinds, in part due to their mechanical design, can also get easily damaged. Blinds that get damaged can be very ugly. Many people, however, may not know how to make repairs to different kinds of blinds due to the mechanics and parts involved. Repairing blinds, though, can be very easy. If you have venetian blinds installed in your house, here a few easy to follow instructions to repair them in case they do some day get damaged.

The first step is to lower the damaged blind. Use the tilt cord to move the slats so they are facing the open position. Next, reach up and unclip the damaged blind. Once it is unclipped, remove it from the bracket. You should now take it to a clean, flat surface you can lay it down on while you make repairs.

Next, take off the end caps and then remove cover from the lower rail. This allows you see any clips or knots that are used fasten the bottom and top of the ladder tape and lift cord. This will also be the case if string ladders are used.

If the ladders are damaged, you will probably want to replace them. Do this first, by disconnecting them. If you are not going to replace them, instead disconnect the bottom and top of the two lift cords. They should be fastened to the rail.

Now you have to take the two lift cords and pull them in upwards motion so they go through the slats. Pull as far as you need to remove any part that is damaged so you can feed ones that are not damaged back on the ladders. Next, take the cords and thread them downwards to where you can fasten them onto the bottom part of the rail. The only other thing you have to do is add back the end caps as well as the cover. Now just simply put everything back in place on your blinds, and you will be done.

Many people choose wood blinds for their home because of the elegance and style that they add. These blinds often times need to be repaired or replaced when the wood slats break. To help save money, you can choose to repair these blinds yourself. With a few common household tools and a little bit of time, you can have your wood blinds looking as good as they did when you first purchased them.

Gathering Supplies for Repairing Wood Blinds

To repair broken slats on wood blinds you will need to have some tools and supplies available. It saves a great deal of time when you gather these items prior to beginning your repair project. By doing this you also ensure that you have these supplies available when they are needed. To complete the repairs on your wood blinds you will need a screwdriver, scissors, a nylon type string that is compatible with your wood blinds and new slats if you are replacing broken ones.

Repairing Broken Slats on Your Wood Blinds

Before beginning the repair project on your broken slats you will need to remove the wood blind from the window. To make it easier to work with your blinds, lay them down on a flat surface. You will need to flip your wood blinds over and remove the plugs that are located on the bottom rail where your blind strings are located. You can use a screwdriver to help pry these plugs out of the hole if necessary. However, if you do use a screwdriver make sure that you do not damage the plugs.

When you have the plugs removed, untie the blind string and remove the bottom rail completely. Unlace your blind string up to the slat that needs to be replaced. Remove your broken slat and replace it with the new wood slat that you purchased. Lace the blind string back through the wood slats in the same manner that they were before you removed them. Some slats may have a top and bottom. Make sure that any patterned slats are put back correctly and continue lacing the string through until you reach the bottom rail. Push the blind string through the hole located on the bottom rail and tie a knot in it. Replace the plug back into the hole, making sure that you cover the blind string knot.

You are now ready to re-hang your wood blinds. This entire repair project should take less than an hour to complete from start to finish.
