Like everyone, Dickens had both good and unplesant characteristics. He certainly wasn't perfect. He was stubborn and sometimes quick tempered. He often blamed others for the problems that he himself caused. The force of will that enabled him to succeed prevented him from taking an honest look at his own life. He tended to be imperious and demanding and many say, something of a peacock: he loved to wear flashy clothes. He sometimes ignored his own children, but he was incredibly unselfish in his charities and special causes. Among other things, he established a sort of half-way house for prostitutes, taking them from the streets and finding them jobs in rural areas, where they could be anonymous. He was a fascinating orator and talented actor. And we must infer that he was funny and entertaining.
Charles Dickens was known for having traits such as creativity, empathy, and a sense of social justice. He had a keen ability to observe and portray the complexities of human nature, as well as a deep compassion for the struggles of the poor and marginalized in society. His work often reflected his strong sense of morality and his desire to advocate for positive change in the world.
While it's unfair--and nigh impossible--to accurately describe even a well-known character from so long ago, below are some of the characteristics that have come down to us from friends and family:
Like everyone else, his character was a mixed bag of pleasant and unpleasant characteristics. He was rigid and almost tyranical with his family; he spoiled his children then complained when they were spendthrifts; he had difficulty accepting blame or responsibility (he resented his wife for having so many children); he could be self-centered and he carried grudges. He possessed a huge ego, which often led him to unwise actions (he chose to conduct his separation from his wife in the pages of the newspaper).
On the other hand, he was generous with his time and money; he was an excellent orator and amateur actor; he was a brilliant writer of fantasy, satire and realism; he was exceptionally loyal (and just as firm in his grievances), and when he loved, he loved totally.
In other words, Dickens was just as flawed and as exceptional as everyone else.
Charles Dickens life experiences were very hard, peoples were poor dirty, and they had to go to the work house, children's didn't have they own parents they had to go to a fostering house... Doctors didn't care when woman's give birth and after they died... LIFE WAS VERY HARD !
Dickens was a rather vain man who was a strict disciplinarian to his children; he was personable and charming and impulsive and generous. He drew strongly from his very specific memory of childhood experiences, even stories told him as a child about death and spirits and other supernatural beings. He had an amazing and reliable eye for detail and personalities and liked to boast of his photographic memory. He was an incredibly hard worker who might be at work on two or three books, actively serving on several boards for charity, and still had so much energy that he walked London and the surround areas at night. (He had favorite places for breakfast on the London outskirts to stop on his return home.)
