My 2007 Virago 250 has a little circle window on the right side of the bike towards the bottom of the gear case (if you put your foot on the right peg, the little window will be located near your heel). You can see the condition of the oil (color) and the level (hash marks next to the window) through this window. The problem I have with checking the oil this way is that the bike has to be upright. It's easiest to have a buddy sit on the bike and prop it up while you check the oil. Otherwise, from the right side of the bike, I pull the bike towards me with my right arm while I squat down to check the oil. Hope this helps.
The 250 virago holds 1.9 quarts of oil total. This includes the oil in the filter. The system holds 1.5 quarts not including filter.

When changing the oil in a Yamaha Virago 250, it depends on the engine size as to how much oil to put in. If it is a 1.4L only 0.36 gallons of oil are needed. However, if it is a 2L then 0.52 gallons are necessary. Do not overflow the reservoir.
