The feast of St. Nicholas marks the beginning of Christmas in Austria. The saint accompanied by devil ask children for a list of their good and bad deeds. good children are given sweets, toys and nuts. Gifts that are placed under the tree are opened after dinner on Christmas Eve. Brass instruments play chorale music room church steeples, and carol singers, carrying blazing torches and a manger from house to house, gather on the church steps.
A Christmas tree and presents are common. In our family traditional Christmas looked like this: At the evening we light candles on the Christmas tree, sang some traditional Christmas songs (like "Es wird scho glei dumpa", "Stille Nacht" - Silent Night). Afterwards presents are handed out, followed by a traditional Christmas food - in our case Sausages with Sauerkraut. In Austria we are being "visited" by the Christkindl (Baby Christ, i.e. Jesus imagined as a child like angel) instead of "Santa Claus". (see the related link below)
This were our traditional Christmas evenings, might in detail from region to region though.
