A second life account that has been cancelled is automatically reactivated when the user logs in to the account.
An account that remains cancelled for longer than the cooling off period set by Linden Lab requires payment to reactivate it.

I found that the only way you can do this is by logging out of the one you're currently using and then creating a new one but using a new email address. Unfortunately if you link it with Twitter or Facebook you can not have a secondary account.

Only Linden Labs (the creator of Second Life) can delete an account. To request deletion, log into your SL account, then use the HELP tab to open a ticket asking for deletion. However, you can cancel your account. Click on "Account" in the main (left side) menu, then click on "Cancel Account". Please note that reinstating a canceled will cost a one-time fee of USD 9.95, regardless if it was a free account or not. Also note that if you request your account be deleted, its GONE. Inventory cannot be recovered if you change your mind, so for that reason it is just better to cancel the account (which will remove you from the search engine).

It could happen when you log back to your desktop after remotely logging into your desktop and logging off. What happened to me was I logged into my office desktop from home and logged off.
