No, there's no evidence of Marilyn Monroe being Autistic.

At the time of Marilyn Monroe's life Autism as a diagnosis was barely formed and certainly she'd not have received diagnosis - if she was Autistic her symptoms were not severe enough for a diagnosis at that point in time, and Autism was still thought of as a 'male' disorder so up until the 1990's very few women were diagnosed as Autistic. Even when looking at retrospective diagnosis there's little to nothing to suggest that she was Autistic - although in females it is much harder to diagnose.

Marilyn Monroe had multiple mental health issues - anxiety, depression, mild acrophobia, and possible personality disorders (as you'd expect from someone who basically lived as her alter-ego!). Also as someone with a history of sexual and physical abuse in her childhood there may have been additional mental health concerns, certainly this was one explanation into her severe insomnia and there are multiple health issues related to insomnia including unusual behaviour.

Alter egos don't have to come from a psychological disorder. Autistic masking is creating a shield-persona or personas and can be misdiagnosed as DID. She was naive, honest, loyal, shy behind the mask. Socially awkward/different. Very Aspiesque imho

There is speculation that Marilyn Monroe had Asperger's Syndrome because of her emotional instability, but it could easily be attributed to another cause.

As far as I understand, Marilyn Monroe had anxiety, depression and it caused her agoraphobia. And having any sort of anxiety disorder -- i.e. GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) -- may and often causes depression and agoraphobia.

And of the millions of us, in this world, diagnosed with GAD and other anxiety and depression disorders, does not mean we have Asperger's Syndrome. Because, well, most of us are not in the Autism spectrum, at all.

Thus, Marilyn Monroe certainly had mental disorders (i.e. GAD, Agoraphobia) that, in today's world, could have been treated with anti-anxiety medications and/or therapy. Apparently, though, she did what many celebrities still do today -- self-medicate for issues that could simply be treated with a mix of the right amount of medication and/or good therapy.

Yes.

  • The final years of Monroe's life were marked by illness, personal problems, & a reputation for unreliability & being difficult to work with.
  • Monroe had three marriages, all of which ended in divorce.

There is no evidence that Marilyn Monroe had paranoid schizophrenia, although her mother did. Marilyn Monroe did not have the characteristic symptoms of schizophrenia, including hallucinations, delusions, and paranoid speech.

I have asperger's myself and after doing some intensive research on the man, his personality quirks were very closely related to my own. He couldn't read music, but he studied it based on sound which is an autistic trait. He was usually a loner and preferred to keep people at a distance which is another autistic trait and I'm the same way, he also had massive stage fright, which isn't necessarily related to autism or aspergers but that's another personality trait we had in common. Johnny Cash knew him and cash had a unique ability to read people and there are quotes from cash specifying that he treaded with caution around Presley because he knew he was different, he took care not to invade his personal space or privacy and he was glad he didn't because there were other performers that wanted to befriend Elvis and cash had witnessed them shot down. Elvis didn't maintain many friendships, he was friendly but he treated everyone like a colleague. So yeah I'd say it's a strong bet that elvis Presley for sure had aspergers.
