There are a few rumours that Brando refused to swear on the bible at a trial stating that he was an atheist, however there is little supporting evidence for that. It is clear that Brando had unconventional beliefs (about a lot of things!) and apparently had a strong affinity for native American spiritual beliefs, he also sent his children to Jewish schools and named one of sons "Christian".

So, all in all, he probably wouldn't have described himself as atheist.

Marlon Brando was raised as a Christian Scientist, but did not formally practice the religion. He considered becoming a minister for a short time, but became an actor instead. Brando was a spiritual person who combined philosophies and practices from many religions in his personal life. He enjoyed Eastern philosophy, Native American spiritualism, and had a deep affinity for Judaism that included sending his children to Hebrew School.
