The answer really depends on what the question means. If the question means, "Was Rubin Carter finally convicted?". then the answer is "No." The final disposition of the case… was that the conviction was set aside. The State of New Jersey decided not to try him again (although it could have), and dismissed the original indictment. Depending on how that was done, it might still be possible to prosecute Carter for murder. If the question means, "Was he involved in the murders of three people at the Lafayette Grill at about 2:30 am on June 17, 1966?", well, that's a more complicated question. Two different prosecution teams, two different juries, and two different trial judges all believed -- beyond a reasonable doubt -- that Carter WAS involved, and the Supreme Court of New Jersey confirmed that decision on several occasions. But there was none of the evidence that we usually regard as conclusive (e.g., fingerprints, confession, DNA) found.

Rubin Carter was a professional middleweight boxer from 1961 to 1966. He fought under the nickname Hurricane. He is probably most famous for being arrested and tried for a tri…ple homicide in 1966. Athough he was convicted twice in 1967 and 1976 he had his conviction overturned in 1985 and it was decided not to pursue him for a third time.
