A few did, but not too many. It was considered a shameful thing when one did, and men were reluctant to speak or write candidly about it, not wishing to disparage the dead. Men were much, much more religious then than is common today, and tended to put it all in God's hands. Religious teaching was against suicide, and the prevalence of religion and reliance on the Lord also helps explain the breathtaking courage routinely displayed - they were letting the Lord do His Will. Those of faint heart often found it easy to slip away and desert the colors.
