Manfred Von Richthofen was the best pilot because he was the only person to through a rock out the window of his plane, hit another plane's engine with it and bring down that plane. That is what made him very famous. Then he went on to shoot down many many planes during the war before he was shot down.

Other pilots included Manfred's brother Lothar, and the last commander of the group was Herman Goering, who went on to be a top Nazi in WWII and commander of the German Air Force. Goering was the one well known legitimate hero the Nazis had, who lent respectability to the Nazis on their rise to power.
