Sitting Hens and EatingThey usually get up off of the nest and eat their regular chicken feed. The eggs will stay warm for the short time she eats, drinks and eliminates waste. They don't do this daily; they may sit on the eggs for several days before leaving them for a few minutes. It is a good idea to leave food and water close to the hen so she will not have too go far. Some hens are so "broody" that they will refuse to leave their eggs for any reason... even if a predator is attacking them. For this reason, it is good to keep food and water dishes right next to the brooding hens so they do not have to leave the nest if they do not want to, this will ensure they keep getting healthy nutrition and hydration during the 21 day incubation period.

Some actually do. Especially if they are rotten, believe it or not. :O When they sit on their eggs (when they go broody) and some don't hatch, they eat them. Gross, I know. I, for one, believe they cannot taste.

Chickens lay their eggs and then sit on them to incubate them by keeping them warm. After anywhere from 21 to 25 days, the egg is ready to hatch and the chick will break through by itself.

Of course they do...every chicken egg comes from a hen. Millions of eggs are produced and consumed everyday and each one was laid by a hen.

Can a hen lay eggs without a rooster and are they safe to eat?

My hens are never left with a cockeral or rooster as I own only hens (except from my chicks) and the eggs are definitely safe! :)

Can you feed chickens their own eggs?

Of course it is safe for you to eat them but on most farms it is not safe for the chicken. Eggs are a good source of protein and most hens like eggs. Eggs get accidentally broken in the nest and will get eaten by the hens but Cannibalistic hens are usually not welcome on a chicken farm as they can eat into the supply of eggs fairly quickly. Most farms will ignore the occasional broken egg being consumed by a flock of hens but any chicken that starts to break and eat eggs is usually invited to Sunday supper.

How many eggs do hens eat per day?

If the hen eats broken or leaking eggs that is OK but if she is breaking open and eating eggs she should be culled from the flock. This behavior can spread to the rest of the flock and cause major problems. Once the hens recognize the eggs as a sourse of food they will continue, leaving you with no eggs and if you breed hens, with no viable stock for the following spring.
