yes the dodo species did lived a long time ago and were extinct in 1681.
they used to exist but we made them extinct by hunting them and eating them although then the meat made us extreamly ill

1. To protect themselves from natural prey as living in groups often deters prey
2. Dodos Not only lived in groups for protection but for the mating side of it as it would have been much easier for them to find potential mates
