Although they usually love it (sometimes only because you are eating it), dogs should be given very limited people food, if any at all. Fresh raw low acid fruits (apples, Pears, blueberries) and low acid veggies are good for them and can be used for a special treat instead of prepared human food. Canned pumpkin, rice and boiled lamb or beef can be made for them as special treats and a tiny nibble from a leftover on your plate would be okay unless they are on a special vet-ordered diet or overweight. Human foods usually contain way too much sodium (salt) for dogs, in addition to too many calories, preservatives, and too much fat.
For daily feeding, dogs should be given food for dogs not food for people, their needs are not the same as ours and quality commercial dog food is prepared to contain the most nutritional blends of food items for their needs. The nutrient combination will vary from product to product, sometimes significantly, so read the product labels, just like you would for people foods to see if the food has the nutrients your dog needs. If you are unsure of their needs, contact your Vet's office and ask one of the Vet Techs for information and recommendations.
Dogs are naturally optimized for eating meat, but most sources now say they should have other foods in their diet, too. Healthy quality dog food includes the main ingredient of meat, and also fruits and vegetables, plus the right amount of fats.
