Sound waves are more precisely described as pressure waves, caused by an oscillating wave of pressure usually in air. Just like dropping a stone in a pond, the waves move out from the source, although usually in three dimensions.
The sound is perceived by humans as the pressure waves hit the eardrum and are transmitted into the inner ear where small hair-like structures are activated and in turn activate nerves that transmit the information to the brain where it is interpreted as sound.

sound waves travel as longitudinal waves, that is the movement of the wave is in the direction of travel. sound is made by vibrations, therefore sound waves create areas of stretched apart air (rarefactions) and compressed air (compressions) which are areas of low and high pressure respectively.

Sound waves are the sound. The waves cause vibrations in the objects that they collide with, and then the vibrated objects create more waves with their vibrations. An example of this would be listening to someone on the other side of a door.

A Standing Wave
When you vibrate you create a sound all sounds are created by vibrations.
