yes, cutting off a vampire's head can kill it, though i believe it also includes setting it on fire. You can also stab a vampire through the heart with a wooden stake, drain it of blood, or leave it out in the sun to burn.
Stabbing a vampire through the heart with a wooden stake does not destroy it. (Vampires are already dead, and talking about killing vampires is an oxymoron.) The whole idea of driving a stake through a vampire is merely to pin it in its coffin or grave. This works but only for as long as the stake doesn't rot. After a few score years they become active again.
Cutting off a vampire's head is considered much more effective HOWEVER some great sorcerers (who were probably vampires as well) have been known to re-assemble themselves, even after being throughly dismembered.
