No the Playstation Network card is only to load money into your Playstation Wallet for PlayStation Store purchases and is not needed for anything to play online except if you have to purchase the game or online rights for some used games

∙ 12y agoSomeone has to pay for the card for it to be activated. It is like all the gift cards sitting on racks in the store that must be activated by the cashier after you pay for them before they have any money on them.
you maybe could if another player gave a PlayStation network card to you if there's still money on it

∙ 12y agoThere is no charge for a normal PlayStation account, but now you can sign up for a PlayStation Plus account that provides benefits mostly from the PlayStation Store and is not needed for using the network for game play or anything else.

∙ 11y agoIf you want to buy games or movies, you will need to add credit to your account. However there are many other reasons to have a PSN account and none of them require money, those reasons include online play, downloading demos and the occasional free game from the PSN, etc.
