It depends on a number of factors. If the baby tooth is infected, it needs to be treated. If the baby tooth is not expected to be lost for several months or years, it needs to be treated. On the other hand, if the baby tooth is close to being exfoliated (naturally lost), then a filling may not be necessary.

You need to discuss your options with a qualified dentist. Failure to properly treat baby teeth can lead to severe and expensive problems in the future.

So early decay doesn't always mean you need a filling. In fact, the decay often can be reversed. A tooth starts to decay because acid in your mouth causes minerals to leach out of the enamel, and the enamel breaks down. Fluoride therapy, dietary changes and better oral hygiene habits can reverse this process by causing minerals to build up in the tooth again, making the enamel stronger. In some cases, a filling is a no-brainer. If you're in pain or have an obvious cavity (a break in the surface of your tooth), you need a filling. But, "If there's no cavity and no pain, the tooth can fix itself.

Composite fillings can help to provide more strength to the teeth. The most important thing is that it can match your tooth color easily. If you have chipped tooth, broken tooth or there has been any wear or tear, composite filling can help. Partially removed tooth can be taken care of easily through composite fillings.

What are cavities?

Cavities in a simple language can be termed as tooth decay. It is a damaged area on the hardened teeth. This damage can be repaired by dental fillings but the damaged part needs to be removed from the tooth. Sometimes if the cavities are not treated on time they can reach the root or nerves of the tooth it may also need root canal treatment. Hence it is advisable to get the cavity checked by a dentist and they can help you with the solution.

How do you get rid of cavities?

If you have a full blown cavity, you will need to have it filled by the dentist. Cavities are caused by the disease called Caries, which is a bacterial disease that EVERYONE has. There is a constant demineralization/remineralization of the tooth from the acid produced by the bacteria and remineralization from ions in your saliva. A diet high in sugar or fermentable carbohydrates (chips, pasta, etc) feeds the bacteria, producing more acid, demineralizing your teeth more, leading to cavities. To help prevent cavities from forming, eat sugar and carbohydrates infrequently, and try to drink water after eating them. Same thing applies for acidic food/beverages. Also, make sure to brush twice a day to get rid of the plaque on your teeth. This is where the bacteria hang out. Be sure to floss once a day, the most common places to find cavities is between teeth because it is the hardest area to clean. Fluoride in drinking water helps keep your teeth strong, as well as fluoride treatments at the dentist- they are NOT just for kids!
