Any dental procedure is going to have some pain associated with it. Using anesthesia or numbing the area where the root canal work is going to be performed may ease some of the discomfort, but bear in mind that when the numbness goes away after several hours, there may be some additional discomfort during the healing process.

Does tooth pain require a root canal?

Not all tooth pain is treated with a root canal surgery, it depends on what is wrong with the tooth and how bad it is. Here are some causes of toothache and a possible treatment: 1) sensitive teeth. Not much can be done about this except for using special toothpaste. 2) Tooth decay. Treated by doing a filling. 3) Abscess. Often after the abscess has been treated with antibiotics it is necessary to root fill the tooth. 4. Sinuses. Sometimes a sinus problem or infection can cause referred pain in certain teeth. Treatment focuses on the sinuses then, not the teeth.

How painful is a root canal on a scale of 1 to 10?

Pain depends on the severity of the infection, the depth of the root canal, the "skill" of the dentist, and your pain threshold. There's lots of factors in a root canal which can increase/decrease pain. I've personally had three root canals. At some points during, it is not comfortable at all. I've never felt pain during any of my root canals, probably because of the anasthetic which is used. In my last root canal I had a small ache afterwards for two days, which I'd pitch at around 2 out of 10.

Does a root canal hurt?

Trust me it doesn't even hurt. The worst part is the shot that makes you numb and that is not even badIf you are really worried just close your eyes the whole tie, listen to music, or anything. You will be fineWhen your tooth is infected it hurts because there is a nerve in the middle. Your dentist will numb the tooth/nerve and remove the nerve from inside the tooth and clean and fill the canals with an organic material.http://hoytdental.com/blog/does-a-root-canal-hurt/

As popular as a root canal?

This was a phrase used by president Obama in his 2010 State of the Union Address. He was talking about the government financial bailout of Wall street and the major banks that occurred in 2009. He said nobody wanted it, but it was necessary and beneficial to prevent a complete breakdown of our economy. He said "it was about as popular as a root canal." The analogy was perfect. Like the bailout, nobody wants a root canal. Nevertheless, thousands of root canal procedures are performed every year primarily for two reasons: 1. They get people out of pain, and 2. They save teeth that would otherwise be lost. The bailout got a lot of people out of severe financial pain (whether they realize it or not) and started the economic turnaround that prevented the total collapse of the economy.
