It depends on two things..which can vary from state to state

1.The landlord tenant laws in your state...

2. The lease agreement.

Some States require that the landlord be responsible for all forms of pest control (ie) roaches,rats,mice,bees,bed bugs,ants,Spiders,ect ect..

Some States only require the landlord to insure that a rental unit is free from all pests before renting the unit and then any further pest control is the responsibility of the tenant...

Lease agreements can also have stipulations for pest control as well according to the laws of the state....(ie) A landlord may be responsible for the control of mice,rats and termites but may not be responsible for roaches,bed bugs and ants...

So check your lease and the laws of your state....

Depending on the city or state that you live in will depend on the level of responsibility that the landlord has regarding bed bugs. Some states require the landlord prove that the unit is bed bug free others will ask the tenant if they have lived anywhere with bed bugs. Just check you local regulations

Most probably it is the responsibility of the landlord to get rid of them.

Check your lease - if it doesn't specifically state you are responsible for exterminating pests & vermin (most don't), look for a paragraph stating that one of the Landlord's responsibility is to keep the unit "habitable". Having parasitic bugs feeding on you at night - that is NOT habitable.

I am a landlord and yes we are responsible but the tenant also has a duty to keep their place clean. In one of my 20-unit buildings I spend $240/monthey on the exterminator who goes into each apartment. Yet one tenant is filthy and leaves dog food out and never cleans. Their apartment is the only one infested and it is their own fault. They are now being evicted for this reason.

In many states yes but there is a catch-gnerally only for those that are health related, like rodents, bedbugs, roaches, black widows or fleas because they bite

Generally, if it's an attached apartment setting then the landlord is responsible for extermination. In a single-family setting or a duplex, it is the tenants responsibility.
