In general, the narrower (or shorter) the sidewall, the stiffer the ride. That's because the short sidewall flexes less than a longer sidewall. It's something like comparing a short, stiff spring to a long, soft spring.

But also in general, a narrow sidewall improves handling for the same reason. Because a short sidewall has less flex, turning the steering wheel will create a more immediate response at the tire and wheel.
