No, it doesn't; you have to file to terminate it. In my case, my son turned 18 while he was still in high school. The court order stated that support was to continue until he turned 18, or left high school, which ever was later. Even after graduation, child support payments continued until I filed proof with the court that he had graduated.
In California the child support obligation continues past 18 years of age, as long as the child is unmarried, is a full-time high school student and is not self-supporting. In this case, the child support obligation will end when the child reaches 19 years of age or graduates high school, whichever of these occurs first.

Not until your child is 18
Generally, yes.
Yes, marriage emancipates a minor.
It was to help end child abuse
No, not unless there is an additon to the court order that requests it.. Standard orders in the State of California end when the child turns 18 and is no longer a full-time high school student.
There is no limit provided at least one of the following statements is true: 1) The child was under 19 at the end of the year. 2) The child was under 24 at the end of the year and a full-time student. 3) The child was totally and permanently disabled. However, the child must not provide more than half of his/her own support. Earnings that the child placed in a savings account (for example) do not count as support. If the child did not meet any of the above requirements, the child cannot have earned more than $3500 (gross income) and YOU must have provided more than half the child's suppport.

Assuming you mean, "assessed" - in general, yes.
There is no statue of limitation in California on child support but it's usually not more than 18 years unless the child support agreement says differently. Your child is not a child and has not been for many years so I don't know why you are still paying and why you have found it acceptable to do so for so long. You need to read the agreement you signed and if this is not correct that you are still paying, you need to contact a lawyer and get the money back from the child's mother. If it is correct and you want to end it you have to go to court so the judge can end it.
There are no published averages for child support in California, and it would be difficult to obtain such information. Child support in California can vary greatly and is entirely dependent on income levels of both parents. The minimum is $100 per month, but can reach very high numbers. For example, a parent earning $20,000 per month could end up paying $5000 or more per month in child support.
Since being gay is not a factor in how a child will end up, the answer is that the child will end up loved.
