"The sky is blue because, the universe is black and when you flash the sun on it it turns blue, so there u go"-Dan

That is part true. The colors of the rainbow go at different speeds. Blue is the slowest of all colors and gets caught by many things before it reaches your eyes. The layer of ozone in the earth's atmosphere (Ozone Layer) catches some of the blue light and keeps it in the sky. The rest is let down onto the seas, to make the water look blue.

If you went into outerspace, it would be a blackness. Since Earth has so many layers separating the Earth's surface and outer space, in every layer, the color get lighter. So that makes the sky we see a light blue.

WHY IS THE SKY BLUE?

The blue color of the sky is due to Rayleigh scattering. As light moves through the atmosphere, most of the longer wavelengths pass straight through. Little of the red, orange and yellow light is affected by the air during sensets.

However, much of the shorter wavelength light is absorbed by the gas molecules. The absorbed blue light is then radiated in different directions. It gets scattered all around the sky. Whichever direction you look, some of this scattered blue light reaches you. Since you see the blue light from everywhere overhead, the sky looks blue.

As you look closer to the horizon, the sky appears much paler in color. To reach you, the scattered blue light must pass through more air. Some of it gets scattered away again in other directions. Less blue light reaches your eyes. The color of the sky near the horizon appears paler or white.

WHY IS THE SUNSET RED?

As the sun begins to set, the light must travel farther through the atmosphere before it gets to you. More of the light is reflected and scattered. As less reaches you directly, the sun appears less bright. The color of the sun itself appears to change, first to orange and then to red. This is because even more of the short wavelength blues and greens are now scattered. Only the longer wavelengths are left in the direct beam that reaches your eyes.

The sky around the setting sun may take on many colors. The most spectacular shows occur when the air contains many small particles of dust or water. These particles reflect light in all directions. Then, as some of the light heads towards you, different amounts of the shorter wavelength colors are scattered out. You see the longer wavelengths, and the sky appears red, pink or orange.

It's more that the atmosphere scatters blue light more readily than it scatters red light. That portion of the scattered light that reaches your eye therefore contains more blue than red, yellow, etc, so the sky looks blue.

Yes, it is true that blue light scatters more effectively than red light, so that white light from the sun scatters in such a way as to make the sky appear blue.

Is orange or blue light refraction more by glass?

well, if you treat glass similarly to how you treat the sky, the glass refracts more blue light. I am not certain about this, but it makes sense. when you look at the sky, you see blue because blue light from the sun is refracted by the atmosphere more than other colors. When i look at glass (clear glass) i see blue when i look through the very thick parts of the glass at the right angle. therefore, blue seems to be refracted the most. if anyone can improve this please do. Is light blue same as sky blue?

No. There are many hues of blues (dark, light, turquoise) and sky blue is a separate one, bright but not necessarily "light" as in pale or pastel. See the link below for some shades of blue.

Can you explain in a pourquoi tale why the sky is blue?

The sky is blue because it is a reflection. == The sky is blue because that's how God tells you where to stop cutting the grass.

Sky blue and white make baby blue?

It Makes Dark Pink

How high do you travel before the sky turns black?

Our sky is blue DURING THE DAY because of two things: 1) sunlight is entering our atmosphere 2) our atmosphere is thick enough to preferentially scatter blue light. If either (1) or (2) cease to be true, then the sky will NOT be blue. As night "falls," the sky does not go instantly from blue to black. Instead, less and less of our Sun's light is available to scatter, and thus the sky goes slowly from blue to black. It's the same way as you go higher and higher. There is no altitude at which there is simply no longer enough atmosphere to scatter enough sun light to give the sky a blue look. It is more the case that, as you go higher and higher, the sky becomes less and less blue -- just like at night "fall." For SOME idea of how our sky changes, check out a video of a space shuttle launch.

Why is ocean blue coloured in a map?

The ocean is blue due to the way that light enters the atmosphere. The spectrum (Rainbow effect) refracts the light and the light is blue this light is reflected of the ocean to make it look blue. this mixed with the depth enables the sea to look blue.

What color does sky blue and light gray make?

dark blue

Why can't sky be yellow?

Because of the way the atmosphere refracts the sunlight - showing the blue part of the spectrum.

Why do air molecules make the sky appear blue?

they do not, the sky is a blue color because that is the color of light that breaks through the atmosphere. if air molecules did make the sky appear blue, then how would you explain a sunset?

Do the stars light make your sky blue?

No. The blue you see in the sky is sunlight scattered by the atmosphere. In simple terms, the sky is blue because blue light is more easily scattered. Additionally, air itself has a very slight bluish tint.

Why you see the sky blue colour?

The gasses that make up our atmosphere pass most light through transparently, but slightly reflect the blue part of the light spectrum. Result: We see the sky as blue.

When are the gases in the sky blue?

Gases in the sky are not blue, the blue of the sky is caused by light scattering. However, oxygen is blue if you liquefy it.

Explain why the sky is blue during the day?

The sky is blue because air scatters blue light more than it scatters red light. So, when you look up at the sky (the sky, not the sun) you are looking at a portion of air. That air has scattered blue light so blue light is what enters your eyes.

What colors are the sky?

The sun gives of light the form of white light. The sun's light is reflected by the sea which is blue. This is why the sky is blue.

is the sky rarely blue?

yes, the sky is light blue. & the clouds are white
