it"s not a bad idea, provided the dolls are attractively dressed, maybe in the same styles as the deceased. The Santerian do honor Saint Barbara- who has indirectly ( Barbie dols) given her name to a popular line of dolls, so why not? On the other hand I have seen neatly executed statues of Charlie Chaplin in botanicas! Demigod of comedy?
With voodoo Dolls
Santeria and Voodoo are two distinct religious practices, but have some aspects in common. as you mentioned dolls one can draw an analogy between totem poles- which are physically static structures- some have movable wings for thunderbirds, etc, and the anthropomorphic but diminutive Katchina ( sometimes spelled Kachina) dolls. they are two different tribal customs. The Katchina dolls are NOT portative totem poles, or something akin to wearable crosses or scapulars.

There are practices in Santeria that involve the drinking of blood; I do not know if all believers in Santeria are required to do so.
