If you look in the glove compartment, on the left hand side should be like a little level that you put down and then it should unlock it and should be able to open the trunk.
To open the trunk on a 1971 VW beetle, there is a little handle in the glove compartment which must be pulled toward the passenger seat to allow you to pop the trunk open. Pull the lever and then push the button on the trunk (hood). It should open right up.
